Modern printing technology enables us to accept manuscripts on data media.
The digital format has a number of advantages over paper manuscripts with respect
to the finished book.
In particular, digital production allows the reproduction of images and graphics at extremely good quality.
The PostScript format is now standard in the printing industry.
It is fully supported by most wordprocessing, graphics and layout programmes.
The widespread use of Windows with driver technology that is application-independent ensures
uncomplicated usage of the PostScript format. A variety of add-on programmes also
enables UNIX users to use PostScript without any difficulty.
Shaker has certain requirements for using the PostScript format, so please
observe the following tips for installing and using the PostScript driver.
PostScript is sent to the printer and controls it.
The processing of data to an image happens in the printer.
Actually, a PostScript file is just a simple text file which contains
the PostScript instructions.
From these, the page that is to be printed is created in the printer.
You can send a PostScript file to a simple 300 dpi laserprinter and print it out.
Or you can send it to an exposer and get the best resolution of 1200 dpi.
The main advantage of PostScript is:
You can send one and the same PostScript file to different printers
and in each case get the best quality, but the page that is printed does not change.
The most popular format of our textbooks is A5.
This necessitates the scaling down of the pages,
as the manuscripts are created in A4 format in wordprocessing.
This is no problem if you want to submit your manuscript on paper.
But later scaling of a PostScript file is error-prone.
Therefore, scaling of the PostScript file when printing is ideal.
Most PostScript printer drivers have options for scaling
(e.g. Windows driver: scaling 70% and with UNIX with DVIPS -x700).
 |
|
The rate of 70% results from scaling down from A4 (297 mm x 210 mm)
to A5 (210 mm x 148.5 mm).
|
| |
|
|
 |
|
Despite this the page should still have A4 paper format
(it is not necessary to change it to A5!).
The position of the scaled page on the printed page is arbitrary,
which renders adjustment of the position unnecessary.

A variety of printer drivers are included in the delivery of Microsoft Windows.
They are all based on the same technology, but differ in the amount of
selectable options. We prefer the Xerox DocuTech 135.
We would like to point out the following potential problem to you:
A subsequent change of the printer driver often causes re-formatting
of the text, because different printers give different printable areas.
The best solution is to install the recommended driver before the definite
formatting of the text.
